The Artist JFeelgood Presents:
'ASCENSION'
2021 Fine Art Series
November 11, 2020.
Four canvases.
Eight colors.
I defined constraints of:
-Using black to simple sketch
-Using only two colors per piece
-Using the absence of color to emphasize the subject more boldly
These paintings were made in collaboration with @cyclop_toad (Improv experimental electro musician, Austin TX) through the process of 'paintjam' where music is performed live as I am painting and our two creative efforts feed one another in a conversation of mediums. What appeared on each piece came to me only when the brush was first picked up, seconds before each new painting began. This series was completed in one hour.
This series stands apart from most works I have done in the last 18 years of painting. It may have been the first time I really set out to challenge myself with intentional constraints rather than environmental constraints I may have found myself in prior, not just in material use but in execution: Say more with less. I found the challenge to be an exciting conduit for deep thoughts, not all but a few, which I hold close to heart. The result was a poignant reminder to me that powerful messages need very little to convey their strength.
Below are the four paintings of the ASCENSION Fine Art Series, created in late 2020 and shown to the public for the first time in 2021.
